The long-overdue arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte marks a crucial step toward justice for the countless victims of his ruthless and violent “war on drugs.” It serves as a powerful reminder that no individual, no matter how powerful—even a former president—is above accountability. 

For years, the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL), alongside victims’ families and human rights defenders, has fought to hold Duterte accountable for the grave human rights violations committed under his regime. Tens of thousands, mostly from poor communities, were executed without due process. Their families continue to seek truth, justice, and an end to the culture of impunity that has long plagued the nation. 

 But Duterte’s arrest is not just about one man; it is about ensuring that those in power cannot wield authority as a weapon against the people. This moment must serve as a stark warning to all public officials who believe they can trample on human rights without consequence. 

The Philippine government must now demonstrate its commitment to the rule of law by fully cooperating with the International Criminal Court (ICC). Any attempt to shield Duterte from prosecution would be a grave injustice, not only to the victims of his brutal policies but to the Filipino people as a whole. Upholding accountability is a test of whether justice can prevail over political interests. 

 While Duterte’s arrest is a victory for those who have long fought for accountability, the struggle is far from over. True justice demands not only his prosecution but also reparations for the victims and systemic reforms to prevent future abuses of power. We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that those responsible for mass atrocities, from top officials to their enablers, are brought to justice. Duterte may have evaded accountability for years, but justice is finally catching up—and it must not stop with him.
