THE ATTACKS AND THREATS against lawyers continued in the first two years of the administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers
(NUPL) recorded a total of 42 incidents of killings and other forms of attacks beginning
01 July 2022 until 31 December 2023.

The number of recorded incidents was twice as high compared to the first two years of his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte. The NUPL documented 26 incidents from 01 July 2016 to 31 December 2017. It must be noted however that 17 of the 26 incidents under Duterte involved the killing of lawyers. Six of these killings may be linked to cases of illegal drugs.
