WRIT OF AMPARO: Realities from the Ground
by NUPL

Seven fact-and-law situations, written from the grit of experience, greet us in this book. No matter how these are finally arranged in the book’s text, we can immediately sense the general frustration and helplessness by victims and lawyers alike with the writ of amparo. Only two of the narrations concluded with some glimmer of hope on the future of this writ. For his part, Atty. Neri Javier Colmenares, president of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, has referred to the obstacles to a compassionate and humane outcome of amparo proceedings as the challenges that we must respond to creatively. This is fair enough considering his breadth of experience fighting for human rights’ defense, promotion and protection. The writ of amparo remains a legal fact and to some extent a remedy which human rights’ workers could use with some probability of success but greater ones for failure in their quest for justice.
