NUPL Stands with NLG: Stop the Attacks on Lawyers Defending Palestine

The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL) stands in solidarity with the National Lawyers Guild and the National Lawyers Guild Foundation, which are under attack for standing up against the genocide in Palestine. The NLG, NLGF, and the Mass Defense Steering Committee are the subjects of a request for an investigation submitted by a member of the US Congress to the Department of Justice without any legitimate legislative purpose.

NUPL condemns this clear attempt at curbing the growing call against the gross human rights violations and serious violations of international humanitarian law committed against the peoples of Palestine.

This practice of “jawboning” — aiming to instill fear and discourage dissent among the members of NLG — should not be tolerated. NUPL reminds the US Congress that lawyers have the right to participate in public discussion of matters concerning the law, the administration of justice, and the promotion and protection of human rights, as reiterated in the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers. Like any citizens, lawyers have the right to exercise their freedoms of expression and association.

This shows how terror laws in the Philippines, by their nature and design, chill speech, deter association, and shrink civic space.
